Ok. Now I think I've got it. Bret, are you home yet?? Sure hope so. I enjoyed being with your boys at the rodeo on Saturday. They looked like they were having fun and so did Matthew. Matthew is praying for you now too. The Magnolia Parkway Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Blood Drive through MD Anderson on June 10. It will be in the Targete Parking Lot. We are asking people to donate to Bret and also Lisa Miller (Millers Black Belt Academy). I'll send you the details later so you can post them. Praying for you in His name. Kitty

Hello Brett and Family,
Great to see your blog up and running.
Was hoping I could post a picture of a fawn we found in our hay yesterday morning but can't seem to figure out how. (Being an outdoor guy, I'm sure you've seen plenty... so imagine!).
The fawn's back there again this morning. Guess Momma Doe knows a nice dry safe place when she sees one. The area is at the end of the barn, is fenced, roofed and has a grey tarp around part of it, so I was surprised to see the baby back there this morning.
Keep healing, Bret. We're all sending good vibes, prayers and best wishes.
Hugs, Ann K Anderson

Hey Bret and Melissa! We are thinking of you across the 'lake'. Info on the blood drive has already been posted on the MT website thanks to Glenn Buckley and Ellen Franken. I am going to send Ellen your blog for the website and to Editor Elyse Taylor for the MT newsletter. This blog is much easier for you than everyone sending emails.
Glad you are home again!
More later. Take care and keep in touch you crazy kids!!

Hey Bret, Thanks for letting us play with your boys for the day and evening. We enjoyed watching Colten and Jack catch the two baby turtles and tadpoles, and really wished we could have mucked along the muddy lake like they did here by our house at the park. Our dogs also liked chasing those ducks and soaking up that good ole muck. We followed Melissa's instructions/ orders and the boys completed their homework. Jack had trouble with one instruction: draw a line to the picture of "Dad fed the cab". That homeschooling is really tough. Well, we hope the boys weren't too traumatized by tonight's "Lost" episode. And Colten woke up about 11:00PM cause his tooth really hurt, then he finished pulling it out. Dan said he could get at least a nickel for it if he put it under his pillow. I noticed it's still on the island counter in the kitchen. So you and Melissa visited your old red Mustang on your way home from M.D. Anderson this afteroon? Did you take her for a spin in it? Can't wait to see you guys pull up in our driveway it that car real soon.

Bret,
I just got back in town and read the email about your new BLOG....I've been reading some of the other entries and its apparent how blessed you are to have so many family and friends who care an awful lot about you and continue to send positive energy and love your way.
Anyway...to my fellow bloggers.
A blog is a great way to share information among the bloggers and the blogged(Bret and family). It might be worthwhile for Bret's entertainment and our's to share some anecdotes and stories about your experiences with Bret. (G-rated only)
Anyway, here goes with some ancient history....In the late 1970s while Bret was living in Jackson MS he owned a blue 1962 Volkswagen bug that he had hopped up and put oversized passenger tires on it...this made it better in the mud. Kind of like a really small, 70 HP, version of his F350. When you turned a corner the tires scraped the fender wells. The car also had so much slack in the steering that Bret had developed this method for keeping it in the center of the road where he would slap the steering wheel back and forth depending on which way it was drifting...it was like he had become one with the car and was dancing with it. That car was the envy of all the teenage boys in the neighborhood. More on the car later.....
You guys are in my thoughts and prayers everyday. I love you my brother. Hope to see you soon. David

Hi Bret,

Well, I thought I posted my note! Now I will try to remember what I wrote. I loved the story about your '62 VW. Wish I could have seen you zipping around in it. I bought a used, yellow super (?) beetle in 1976. What a lemon! I was divorced, had a little son and was so poor, so my friends did a valve job on the beast. It seemed to work (with some oil leaks) and I drove it for a few more years. The best part for me was that the radio worked! I can still close my eyes, smell a little burning oil, and be back on Westheimer going to work while listening (and seat dancing) to KC & the Sunshine Band's "Get Down Tonight." When Paul and I met, he had a yellow Porsche and eventually we became a yellow car family and lived happily ever after. Ah, the VW memories! I think of you and family every day. I am just across Blue Lake (AKA Tan Pond) so let me know if I can help.

Terry said...

I loved the vw story from Charlotte! Just a short note to say hello and that we miss seeing your smiling face!!! Its been so hot out there that I could fry eggs except in the evenings when I have enjoyed a few minutes out on the porch. Meranda,Emmit Sr and I signed up to give blood. Meranda posted it at her shop and I hope all you guys reading this will go and give to! We love you guys and till next time stay cool!

Hey Bret, What a great surprise it was to see you and Kitty in your crazy camo cart driving up to my house! I took some pics and if I could figure out how to upload to the site, I would. You would think that a graphics person could do that...
The boys can fish from our dock any time. It's a scene straight out of Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn to see them trekking across our backyard by the lake. They are adorable! When I warned them about the snakes, I'm not sure they REALLY believed me! A hug from East Blue Lake!

Hi Bret! We are very sorry that you weren't feeling very good today, I told Mo, that I would email you guys some pics of the babies,I was thinking to that if you ever feel like your up for some company, I would gladly pack up the kids and come visit you so you can see the babies. Also, I wanted to say that I am very sorry for what you are going through there aren't any words to describe how very sorry we are. You guys are very awesome people, and it's just so wrong. I really don't know what the appropriate things are to say,I think that there is probably nothing anyone can say to make this easy,I just can't even begin to imagine,so..We are just terribly, terribly sorry. You are a very good man, and Mo is a very strong woman, we love you both very much.

Hello from East Blue Lake!
You had company when we dropped by last evening but I finally met Juan after all of this time! What a wonderful, sweet and caring young man he is! I gave him two pics of you and the boys in the camo cart--one for you and one for him.
Tell the boys they can call me Coco. I don't think they know who I am except..that crazy old chick by the lake!
Hope today will be a good one for you, Melissa and family and that I will see you later today cruising in the camo cart!
a BIG hug,

Hi Bret,
I wanted to let you know that you & your entire family are in my prayers. I am very sorry that you are going through a tough time. You have been so courageous throughout this battle. I have always admired your strenght yet tender love towards your children and Melissa, but you CAN NOT keep up on the great disco song singing with me....I alway laugh when I hear "I love the night life" song. You remeinded me of us girls (Me, Melissa & Vanessa)singing it on your deck the last time we spoke, as I then felt obliged to sing it to you on the phone. YOU ARE A BRAVE MAN to endure that alone. I miss you Bret & look forward to good times with you ahead. God Bless you!
Love Always,
Kim Pelton

Hi Bashams,
Heard Greg visited you today, then Reed and Sandy. Hope you received the meal from Susan & Glenn Buckley today, also.
I baked peanut butter cookies last night to take to you; however, they are like chewing rocks. When I told my 5 yr. old grand daughter, Tanner, that I baked cookies, she didn't believe me. She wouldn't eat one either. Does that clue you in on my kitchen skills?
Hope tomorrow is a good day for you.

Dear Bret's Buddies, I am very sorry to tell you that Bret passed away at about 3:10PM Saturday afternoon, June 7th. He was at home with his family, as he wished. He was a strong brave man, he fought a long hard battle and won everlasting life, free of the pain he has lived with so long.
Bret gave our daughter Melissa many years of love, and left her with two fine sons who will pass on his legacy of artistry with horticulture, and strength in the face of any adversity. We will miss him terribly, as many of you will. Sally and Dan

Dear Basham Extended Family,
Bret's memorial service was so special. I was especially grateful for the many photos that showed a side of Bret I didn't know--a boy, teenager, young man, groom and early fatherhood. The speakers' stories were touching and funny. I know now why you love Juan so much. You thought of so many details to make it an extraordinary afternoon. I'm sure Bret approved. Sorry I could not stay for the reception.
Take care and keep in touch!
